Greta Garbo stars as Christina, the wise Swedish queen who wanders the land dressed in men’s clothes. The film’s ambiguous play with gender identity made it a favourite for the ‘gender cinema’ movement.
Director Rouben Mamoulian managed to get a great performance from Garbo in her role as Christina, the wise, passionate Queen of Sweden who relinquished the throne for her love of the Spanish ambassador. Christina is shown with short hair and wanders the land dressed in men’s clothes to avoid intrigue at court – where they are trying to marry her off to a war-mongering prince.
