Humans of Film Festival

Humans of Film Festival (HoFF) is back for an expanded sixth edition: nine days of arthouse film, screened across the city. This year’s programme is built around EMPATHY and brings together feature films and shorts from around the world. Screenings are paired with talks, workshops and community events that explore the theme from every angle.

HoFF celebrates world cinema and human interest films that center diverse, often underrepresented voices and lived experiences. Rooted in a strong social and cultural mission, the festival creates space for connection and storytelling across themes such as identity, inequality, migration, and representation.

Lying inside an MRI scanner, Rosa, a woman in her fifties, is asked to recall a single happy memory. Instead, her mind drifts back to a traumatic moment from her childhood: the arrest of her fiercely independent, queer mother, Dalva, who was imprisoned after killing a neighbour’s husband while trying to protect his wife from domestic violence.

With few happy memories to draw on, Rosa sets off on a surreal road trip through her subconscious, accompanied by the mother she never truly got to know. Against the shimmering desert hills and lively bars of northern Brazil, the two women imagine the moments of happiness they never shared. As they piece together a past that never existed, Rosa discovers that even invented memories might help heal old wounds.
