The Amsterdam LGBTQ+ community is mourning the loss of Walther Ploos van Amstel, who passed away on Saturday, October 3. Known to many by his DJ name, Big General, he was a celebrated figure in the city's nightlife and, in a parallel career, a distinguished professor and expert in logistics, reports GayNews.nl.

Alongside his partner Bram, as the DJ duo 'Bramsterdam and Big General,' Walther was a fixture behind the decks at iconic venues like Club chUrch and sauna NieuweZijds. He was a co-founder of Furball, one of the most successful party concepts in the bear and wider queer community, and a regular presence at major festivals like Funhouse and Milkshake. On the dance floor, he was known for fostering an atmosphere of acceptance, celebrating all body types and bringing people together through music.

Beyond the nightlife, Ploos van Amstel led a remarkable academic career. He was a Lector in City Logistics at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and served as a professor of logistics at the Netherlands Defence Academy. His expertise was sought after by organisations like TNO and Taxicentrale Amsterdam, and he was a frequent contributor of columns and articles on mobility and logistics, including for Het Parool.

A Bridge Between Two Worlds

While a professor of logistics and a queer nightlife DJ might seem like disparate roles, for Walther, they were connected by a common thread: bringing people together. He understood the dynamics of movement, whether it was optimising city supply chains or creating a flow of energy in a crowded club. He often noted how his practical experience in event organisation informed his academic work, and vice versa, surprising students who would see their professor in the DJ booth at a festival.

Walther Ploos van Amstel is remembered not just for his professional achievements or his DJ sets, but for his warm, connecting personality and his unwavering dedication to the community. He leaves behind a significant legacy of inclusivity and inspiration. Our thoughts are with his partner Bram, his family, and his many friends.
