A new chapter for the Prime Minister and his husband

Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his husband, Nicolás Keenan, are expecting their first child. The couple shared that their long-held wish to start a family is becoming a reality, with the baby due in the spring of 2027.

In a statement, the couple expressed their happiness. The pregnancy was made possible through an altruistic surrogacy arrangement with a befriended couple. Both the surrogate mother and the egg donor are Dutch and are close friends of Jetten and Keenan. The entire process has taken place within the Netherlands, adhering to all national laws and regulations regarding non-commercial surrogacy.

A dream realized through friendship

This path to parenthood highlights a route that many same-sex couples explore. For Jetten and Keenan, it was made possible by the generosity of friends. "We are incredibly grateful that, thanks to two wonderful women, we now have the chance to make our big dream come true," Jetten said. "The surrogate and the baby are doing well, which is of course the most important thing for now. We make an urgent appeal to everyone to respect the privacy of those involved."

The surrogate, identified as Lisa, also shared her perspective on the journey. "I grew up in a warm and loving environment and now have a fantastic family of my own," she stated. "With the unconditional support of our loved ones, surrogacy feels like a very special way to help make our dear friends' dream come true."

Balancing public life and parenthood

As a high-profile couple—Jetten as the nation's Prime Minister and Keenan as a professional hockey player for the Argentinian national team—they are preparing to balance their demanding careers with family life. Jetten plans to take several days of leave around the time of the birth before resuming his duties. Keenan has also made arrangements with his hockey club to ensure he can be present for his new family.

The news marks a significant moment for LGBTQ+ visibility in the Netherlands, with the head of government openly sharing his journey to fatherhood with his husband. It provides a prominent example of a rainbow family at the highest level of Dutch society.
