Monalisa Toneel presents the Dutch premiere of Stephanie's Friends. Inspired by a Chekhovian drama from 1977 by the Cuban Irene Fornès (1930-2018). At a young age, she emigrated to New York and became the lover of philosopher Susan Sontag.
Their passionate relationship is documented in Sontag's diaries. That a queer woman like Irene Fornès, with such an impressive body of work, 50 plays, and theater awards, is still relatively unknown... quite remarkable, isn't it?
Stephanie's Friends
Seven women rehearse for a fundraiser. They also examine their love relationships. Between the lines, it becomes clear how each is searching for her own path within a patriarchal society.
