Belgian director Lukas Dhont is only 34 years old but has already won awards at the Cannes Film Festival with three feature films. After Girl and Close, the war film Coward is, by his own account, his most ambitious film to date.
The film takes us to the front of the First World War in 1917 and revolves around the complex love relationship between two young soldiers, who try to keep their spirits up with variety show performances while their comrades die in the trenches. Coward was selected for the main competition in Cannes. Both lead actors, Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne, took home the award for Best Actor.
