As part of our TRANS Theater Weekend, Podium Sleutelwoord is organizing an inspiring Queer Poetry Workshop. In this workshop, participants will delve into the history of queer poetry and explore how it can function as a form of expression, identity, and activism. Using existing queer poems, you will write, experiment, and work on your own voice, regardless of how much experience you have.
The workshop is led by Marre Westerbeek, part of Podium Sleutelwoord: the premier stage for spoken word and performance in Leiden, featuring evenings of poetry, sharp texts, music, and performance. Marre studied film and literary science, specializing in queer literature and translation. Currently, they teach and conduct research on making cultural and educational spaces more accessible for people with low literacy.
From this background, Marre approaches queer poetry not just as an aesthetic art form, but as something inextricably linked to community and activism. As they say themselves: “The privileges I enjoy are due to the activism of others.” This activist perspective forms the basis of this workshop: an open and accessible space to share stories, discover new forms of writing, and reflect together on the power of queer language and imagination.
