Is the Netherlands still a progressive pioneer?

The Netherlands has long been known as a pioneer in LGBTQ+ rights, being the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. But is this progressive image still accurate? In recent years, reports of violence against queer individuals have increased, and social acceptance seems to be stagnating. How progressive is the Netherlands really today?

Join us for a Science Café discussion where we delve into the complex reality of queer emancipation in the Netherlands. We will explore the historical context, current social dynamics, and the political landscape affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

Speakers

Dr. Marijke Huisman (Historian, Utrecht University) will provide a historical perspective on the Dutch queer rights movement.
Prof. Dr. John de Wit (Sociologist, Utrecht University) will discuss the latest research on social acceptance, health, and well-being within the queer community.
A political scientist (to be announced) will analyze the current political climate and its impact on LGBTQ+ policy.

This event is a collaboration between Studium Generale Utrecht University and TivoliVredenburg. There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions. Admission is free.
