Everyone is welcome who has read the book (or DNF, and is okay with spoilers) by the time of the meetup. The book club is hosted in English.
While we are waiting for everyone to arrive, we have tea and get comfortable. Once most of the group is seated we go around introducing ourselves. From there we have a casual, loosely structured discussion that can go in whatever direction feels natural. Once we've talked about everything we want to related to the book we often hang out for a while later to chat about other things for anyone who wants to stay.
This month's book is The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai, a dazzling novel of friendship, redemption and loss. The novel follows two storylines in alternating chapters. The first, set in 1980s and '90s Chicago, centers on Yale Tishman, an art gallery acquisitions manager living in Boystown. As he navigates a career-defining deal, the largely gay male community to which he belongs crumbles around him due to the devastation of the AIDS epidemic. The second plotline takes place in Paris in 2015. It follows Fiona Marcus, a secondary character from the first storyline, as she searches for her estranged adult daughter and reckons with the lasting impact that the AIDS epidemic has had on her life.
