Get Ready for Your New Obsession
Just when you thought your streaming schedule was full, queer television icon Ryan Murphy is back to claim your attention. The creative force behind game-changers like Pose, Glee, and the ever-evolving American Horror Story is dropping a brand-new series, and it promises to be a deliciously dark cocktail of high fashion, gruesome horror, and biting social commentary. Titled The Beauty, this FX production is set to be the campy, thrilling ride we've been waiting for.
High Fashion Meets High-Stakes Horror
So, what's the tea on The Beauty? Imagine The Devil Wears Prada getting a sinister, body-horror makeover. The series plunges into the cut-throat world of international fashion, where supermodels start dying in mysterious and grotesque ways. This brings in a pair of FBI agents, played by Murphy-verse regular Evan Peters and the brilliant Rebecca Hall, to uncover the truth.
Their investigation leads them to a terrifying discovery: a sexually transmitted virus that transforms ordinary people into paragons of physical perfection, but with deadly consequences. At the center of this web is a shadowy tech billionaire known as "The Corporation" (Ashton Kutcher), who has engineered a miracle drug version of the virus called "The Beauty" and will stop at nothing to protect his trillion-dollar empire.
A Cast Packed with Queer Talent
While the main cast is stacked, the real excitement for our community lies in the incredible lineup of queer and allied talent. The series features a main role for Jeremy Pope (Pose, Hollywood), who plays a desperate outsider caught in the chaos.
The guest star list is even more impressive, essentially a who's who of queer Hollywood and iconic allies:
- Openly gay actors Billy Eichner (Bros) and Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) are set to appear.
- We'll also see the incredible Lux Pascal, a talented trans actress and sister of Pedro Pascal.
- Icons like Isabella Rossellini and a host of other familiar faces including Bella Hadid, Meghan Trainor, and Peter Gallagher round out the star-studded cast.
A Critique on the 'Ozempic Culture'
Beyond the glamour and gore, The Beauty aims to dissect our society's dangerous obsession with perfection. Murphy himself described the show's inspiration as a look into what he calls "the Ozempic culture."
"One little shot, and suddenly you’re going to look better and feel better, and all your problems are going to go away," he told Variety. "But what are you really working on? What’s going on with you that you feel you need to do that? Sometimes it is health, sometimes it’s vanity." This theme is especially resonant, touching on the immense pressure for physical perfection that exists within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.
How to Watch in the Netherlands
