The Harry Potter author has published another lengthy screed, doubling down on her harmful views about trans people under the guise of 'protecting women' and promoting her new exclusionary ventures.

J.K. Rowling's New Essay Is a Long, Predictable Rehash of Her Anti-Trans Obsession

Just when you thought the discourse couldn't get any more exhausting, J.K. Rowling has logged on. The author, once beloved for creating a world of magic, has published a new, lengthy essay on her website to remind everyone that her primary focus is no longer fantasy, but a grim and obsessive campaign against transgender people.

Titled "An Update to My Essay of June 2020," the piece is exactly what it sounds like: more of the same. Rowling insists her views haven't changed, and then spends several thousand words proving it, rehashing tired, debunked arguments and framing her anti-trans activism as a noble feminist crusade.

The essay serves as a promotional vehicle for her latest projects: Beira's Place, a rape crisis center in Edinburgh that explicitly excludes trans women, and the J.K. Rowling Women's Fund, which provides financial support for legal battles against trans-inclusive policies. Let's be perfectly clear about what this is. This isn't just charity; it's the funding and institutionalization of bigotry. She is creating an infrastructure of exclusion, using the very real issue of violence against women as a cynical shield to attack one of the world's most vulnerable communities.

The Same Old Harmful Tropes

At the core of her argument is the same dangerous lie that has fueled transphobia for decades: the idea of the trans woman as a predator in disguise. She writes that "there is zero evidence that trans-identified men don’t share the same pattern of criminality as all other men," a deliberately misleading statement that ignores the fact that there is also zero evidence they are a unique threat. This is a classic dog whistle, designed to paint trans women as inherently dangerous and justify their exclusion from public life.

This rhetoric isn't just an 'opinion.' It has real-world consequences, fueling the moral panic that leads to legislative attacks on trans rights and physical violence against trans people, particularly trans women of color.

In a truly breathtaking inversion of reality, Rowling claims that "trans activism is the very inverse" of past civil rights movements, calling it "elitist to its core." It's a bizarre claim coming from a billionaire author who is using her immense wealth and global platform to punch down on a marginalized group fighting for their basic right to exist safely. Who is the elite here? The person with a literal castle, or the trans teen trying to avoid being bullied at school?

A Global Fight

While Rowling's examples are UK-centric, this isn't just a British problem. The "gender-critical" movement is an international phenomenon, and its talking points are shared by right-wing politicians and anti-LGBTQ+ groups across Europe, including here in the Netherlands. When a figure as powerful as Rowling gives these ideas a mainstream gloss, it emboldens those who wish to roll back rights for our entire community.

She concludes her essay by quoting Orwell and stating, "If a man can be a woman, there is no such thing as a woman." This reveals the heart of the matter: a profound failure of imagination and empathy from a writer who built an empire on those very things. The existence of trans women does not erase cis women. The only thing being erased here is our shared humanity in the face of baseless fear and prejudice.

For years, the Harry Potter fandom has shown more creativity and compassion than the series' author, building an inclusive community that rejects her exclusionary views. They've learned the book's most important lesson, even if she's forgotten it: that it is our choices, not our circumstances, that show what we truly are. Rowling has made her choice. So have we.
