A New Era for Dutch LGBTQ+ Athletes

The days of Dutch athletes traveling to the Gay Games as individuals or in small, separate groups are over. In a significant development for the national LGBTQ+ sports community, the Netherlands will send its first-ever official, unified delegation—Team Netherlands—to the Gay Games XII in Valencia, Spain, from June 27 to July 4, 2026, reports Winq.

The initiative is spearheaded by Stichting Pride and Sports (P&S), which has been named the official partner for the Dutch delegation by the Federation of Gay Games. This new approach is designed to create a stronger sense of unity, visibility, and national pride among the participants.

What It Means to be 'Team Netherlands'

Athletes who join the official delegation will experience the Games as part of a cohesive national team. The organization aims to foster a strong community feeling with several key benefits:

  • Unified Look: All members will receive an official Team Netherlands sports apparel package, ensuring a consistent and recognizable presence during competitions and ceremonies.
  • A Home in Valencia: A local 'Holland House' will serve as a central meeting point and social hub for Dutch athletes, friends, and supporters.
  • Official Recognition: The team will be formally received by the Dutch consulate in Valencia, adding an official stamp to their participation.
  • Ceremonial Unity: The entire delegation will march together as one block during the opening and closing ceremonies, presenting a united front on the world stage.

To encourage participation, Pride and Sports is also providing logistical support, including information on pre-selected flights and accommodation options, as well as a 10% discount on the event registration fee for team members.

Historic First: Gymnastics Tumbles into the Gay Games

In another major first, gymnastics will be included as an official sport in the Gay Games program. This historic addition is the result of a Dutch-led effort, with Pride and Sports being appointed by the Federation of Gay Games to organize the competition.

P&S is collaborating closely with Triple X Gymnastics, the Netherlands' own successful queer gymnastics team and recent national gold medal winners. The inclusion of gymnastics is a milestone, bringing visibility to LGBTQ+ athletes in a sport often governed by traditional gender norms.

About the Gay Games

Founded in 1982 by Dr. Tom Waddell, an Olympic decathlete, the Gay Games were created to promote the spirit of inclusion and personal achievement through sport and culture. Held every four years, the event welcomes everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or athletic ability, to participate and achieve their personal best.
