The tour encourages participants to look beyond traditional interpretations and discover queer narratives, both explicit and implicit, within the museum's holdings. The concept is described by the museum as looking at art with 'roze bril' (pink glasses), a way to move past heteronormative assumptions and find new meanings in familiar works.
Exploring Queer Themes in Art
To make the concepts tangible, the tour highlights specific pieces to illustrate its themes. Examples include discussions around the historical figure of Saint Sebastian, who has been embraced over time as a gay icon, and an examination of artworks that explore the concept of the body in transition. The tour aims to demonstrate that 'queer' is a fluid and expansive term that defies easy categorization.
The tours are led by Patrick Verhoeven, an educational employee at the museum. Verhoeven has previously written on the relationship between queer art and the established art canon for Mister Motley Magazine, bringing an informed perspective to the guided walks through the collection.
