Titled ‘Seen and Unseen: A Queer Look at Old Portraits’, the program aims to address critical questions about visibility in art history. It will delve into the tension between the public personas depicted in historical portraits and the private identities that may have been concealed. For centuries, official histories and museum collections have often overlooked or erased non-normative identities, and this event provides a framework for discussing who gets to be seen, whose stories are told, and who holds the power of representation.
The evening is designed to be a dialogue rather than a traditional lecture. Following a brief introduction from curator Tristan Schiff (he/him), participants will break into small groups for guided conversations amidst the portraits. Discussions will be centered on themes such as the divide between public and private life, the relationship between identity and lived experience, and the role of museums in shaping historical narratives. The format encourages sharing diverse perspectives in an open setting.
In a move to foster an inclusive environment, the museum has organized the event in collaboration with local community groups Queer Alkmaar and Safe Space Alkmaar. The partnership underscores a commitment to engaging directly with the community whose history is being explored. The evening will conclude with an informal drink at the museum café, offering a chance for further conversation.
