GRONINGEN – A guided bike tour is set to offer a detailed look into the multifaceted queer history of Groningen, covering stories of persecution, activism, and celebration that span from the Late Middle Ages to the modern era. The "Alternative Groningen Tour" will take place on 22 March 2026, as part of the national Queer History Month programme.
Led by guide Fiona, the 2.5-hour tour aims to uncover the often-hidden LGBTQ+ narratives within the city. Participants will cycle around the city center, visiting locations tied to significant historical events and personal stories. The tour's narrative promises a balanced perspective, exploring painful accounts of persecution alongside inspiring stories of resistance, community building, and emancipation.
According to the organisers, Fiona has collected a range of local anecdotes that will be placed within their broader historical contexts. The content will touch upon moments that are described as "gruesome," but also those that are "powerful, funny, inspiring, and moving," providing a comprehensive view of the queer experience in the northern city over several centuries.
The event highlights that LGBTQ+ history is not confined to major metropolitan areas but is woven into the fabric of cities and towns across the Netherlands. This tour provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to connect with that local heritage.
