The event, titled "Rainbow history from the street to the archive," will provide attendees with a two-part experience that connects historical documents with the physical locations where history was made. It aims to bring to life the stories and struggles of Nijmegen's queer community over the years.
The evening will begin inside the Regional Archive, where archivist Anthony Livius will present a short lecture. He will showcase a selection of unique sources and documents from the archive's collection that illuminate key moments and figures in the local queer history. This provides a rare opportunity to see the tangible evidence of the community's past.
Following the presentation and a short break, a guide from RegenboogRoutes will lead a city walk through Nijmegen. The tour will visit both well-known and more obscure locations significant to the city's rainbow history. The organisers have noted that the walk will cover topics such as the 'Pottengrot', the practice of 'de baan op gaan', and the origins of the city's famous Roze Woensdag (Pink Wednesday) during the annual Vierdaagsefeesten.
This event offers a comprehensive look at local history, from the preserved records in the archive to the living memory embedded in the city's streets.
