Roze Filmdagen to Conclude with Queer Zombie Comedy
The Roze Filmdagen LGBTQ+ film festival in Amsterdam will conclude its upcoming edition with a screening of "Queens of the Dead," a film that pits a group of drag queens and club kids against a zombie apocalypse. The closing night event is scheduled for Sunday, 29 March 2026, at the Ketelhuis cinema.
The film's plot centres on what should have been an epic party night in Brooklyn. When a zombie outbreak engulfs the borough, the celebration turns to chaos. A diverse group, including drag performers, club kids, and an unlikely, homophobic plumber, find themselves trapped together in an old warehouse. Their only chance of survival is to set aside their conflicts and unite as a community.
Described as a queer twist on the classic zombie genre, the film blends suspense and humour while exploring themes of chosen family and survival. A key question posed by the film is what it means to survive when all you have left are your "girls, gays, and theys."
A New Generation of Romero
A significant aspect of the production is its director, Tina Romero. She is the daughter of George A. Romero, the legendary filmmaker whose 1968 classic "Night of the Living Dead" established the foundation of the modern zombie movie. With "Queens of the Dead," Tina Romero brings her own distinct and queer perspective to her family's cinematic legacy, creating what the festival calls "the ultimate closing film with and for the entire LGBTQ+ community."
