Actor Luke Evans is preparing to make his Broadway debut in the cult classic 'The Rocky Horror Show', and has shared a first look at his transformation into the show's magnetic anti-hero, Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
In a series of photos from a shoot with Vogue magazine, the openly gay actor is seen in full costume, complete with fishnet stockings, high heels, and a tightly-laced corset. The images were quickly circulated on social media, sparking considerable interest among theatre fans and the LGBTQ+ community.
The production is set to open at New York's legendary Studio 54. Evans, 46, expressed his enthusiasm for taking on the demanding role, which was famously originated on screen by Tim Curry in the 1975 film adaptation, 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'.
"When you come from the theatre, you know that the dream of really everyone is to play on Broadway at least once," Evans stated in a recent interview. "I'm finally having my moment in the craziest role I could ever imagine!"
He also shared his approach to the character's complex and fluid identity. "Frank can be flamboyant and feminine, smooth and seductive, but there is also a threat in him," Evans explained. "I want him to be attractive in many, many different ways, so that men and women can look at him and say, 'Hmmm.'"
A Cultural Touchstone
Created by Richard O'Brien, 'The Rocky Horror Show' premiered in London in 1973. It quickly developed a devoted following for its rock-and-roll score, B-movie horror parody, and its celebration of sexual liberation and androgyny. For decades, the show and its film adaptation have been a significant part of queer culture, offering a space for audiences to embrace individuality and non-conformity.
Evans' casting continues a long tradition of notable actors stepping into Frank-N-Furter's heels. His take on the "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania" promises to bring a new energy to the iconic role.
The Broadway revival of 'The Rocky Horror Show' is scheduled to have its premiere on April 23rd.
