The chaotic family at the heart of the popular 2000s sitcom Malcolm in the Middle is set to expand in its upcoming revival. The new series, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, will introduce Kelly, a non-binary sibling. The role will be portrayed by non-binary actor Vaughan Murrae (they/them).
The decision to include a non-binary character was a personal one for the show's creative team. In a recent interview with Deadline, creator Linwood Boomer and executive producer Tracy Katsky explained that the choice reflects their own family, as three of their four children identify as queer.
Katsky noted the importance of integrating the character's identity naturally into the show's narrative. "Without making it a thing and without making an issue, I think it’s really nice to have a character that, that’s just a facet of their personality as opposed to the entire story," she said. This approach aims to present a more normalized and integrated form of representation, moving beyond storylines that focus solely on a character's identity.
Authentic Casting and Broader Representation
Vaughan Murrae is a Canadian actor known for their roles in the TV series The Way Home and the film I Like Movies. Their casting continues a positive trend of hiring actors who share the identity of the characters they portray.
The revival will also feature other LGBTQ+ representation. Stevie Kenarban, Malcolm's best friend from the original series played by Craig Lamar Traylor, will reportedly be gay and have his own family in the new series.
For many in the Netherlands who grew up watching the original series, the return of Malcolm in the Middle with a more contemporary and inclusive reflection of family life marks a significant evolution for the beloved sitcom.
