A Vital New Resource for Amsterdam's Queer Community
For many homeless LGBTQ+ individuals, the streets of Amsterdam are not just cold at night—they are fraught with danger. Fearing discrimination, harassment, and violence, many avoid traditional homeless shelters, leaving them without a safe place to rest. Recognizing this critical gap in support, De Regenboog Groep has launched a vital new initiative: a small-scale, dedicated night shelter for the LGBTQ+ community.
This new shelter is more than just a roof over their heads; it's a space designed with safety, acceptance, and understanding at its core. "We do our best to make all our facilities as inclusive as possible," explained Anika Apfel of De Regenboog Groep. "But we see that for some visitors, this is not enough. That's why we created this specific shelter where safety, acceptance, and understanding are central."
The LGBTQ+ Night Shelter: A Place to Heal
Located at the Princehof drop-in center, the new night shelter provides a safe sleeping place for up to ten LGBTQ+ individuals. The support offered is tailored to the unique challenges faced by the community.
- Specialized Staff: The team is trained in gender and sexual diversity issues, as well as the trauma and psychological vulnerabilities that can accompany them.
- Pathway to Support: Beyond immediate safety, the shelter helps guests connect with appropriate long-term assistance and healthcare services.
- A Peaceful Environment: The primary goal is to offer a calm and secure environment where individuals can rest without fear.
How to Access the Shelter
Access to the night shelter is managed through official channels to ensure it reaches those most in need. Individuals can be referred by a social worker from De Regenboog Groep or by registering with the GGD Amsterdam.
GGD Registration:
Location: Jan van Galenstraat 323, entrance B
Hours: Monday to Friday, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
New Drop-in Day for Women and LGBTQ+ People
In addition to the night shelter, De Regenboog Groep has also established a special weekly drop-in day for women and LGBTQ+ individuals. This initiative provides another layer of safety for those who feel particularly vulnerable in mixed-gender environments.
"We see incidents related to partner violence, misogyny, or sexism," Apfel noted. "Many homeless women feel safer among other women and are more likely to take the step towards getting help in such a setting."
This dedicated day offers a welcoming space to relax, connect with others, and access support services without pressure.
Weekly Drop-in Details:
When: Every Thursday, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Where: Makom Inloophuis, Van Ostadestraat 153
