The Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus has raised nearly €8,000 to produce educational videos and materials in partnership with COC Nederland, aimed at improving safety for LGBTQ+ students in schools.

The Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus has successfully completed a crowdfunding campaign, raising a total of €7,945 to develop an educational project aimed at Dutch schools. The initiative will use the personal stories of chorus members to create resources for educators, with the goal of fostering a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ pupils.

The funds, which surpassed the initial target, will be allocated to a multi-faceted project developed in collaboration with COC Nederland, the country's leading LGBTQ+ advocacy organisation. The core of the project involves producing two educational video clips designed to help teachers address homophobia and support students in the classroom.

Project Goals and Collaboration with COC Nederland

According to the announcement, the money raised will directly support several key objectives:

  • Video Production: Creation of two educational clips for use by teachers and school staff.
  • Educational Materials: Development of accompanying lesson plans and workshop guides.
  • Distribution: A coordinated effort with COC Nederland and educational boards to ensure the materials reach schools across the country.
  • Launch Event: A public launch, provisionally scheduled for September 2026, which will include a screening of a longer documentary version.

A significant development is the ongoing discussion with COC Nederland to potentially include the films in the official education package for Paarse Vrijdag (Purple Friday). Held annually in December, Paarse Vrijdag is a national day in Dutch schools where students and staff wear purple to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, making it a key moment for visibility and education.

From Stage Performance to Classroom Resource

The inspiration for the project stemmed from the chorus's recent winter show, 'Welcome to the Family!', where singers shared personal stories on stage. Kenneth, a chorus member and primary school teacher, noted the audience's reaction and the clear need for such narratives in an educational context.

"As a primary school teacher, I see kids struggling every day—not just with their own feelings, but with the attitudes of the world around them," he explained. "Unfortunately, name-calling and exclusion are still common, yet educational resources to tackle this subject are still really lacking."

This initiative represents a direct effort by the chorus to leverage its performance art for community outreach and social impact. The project will be produced in Dutch to ensure maximum relevance and accessibility for its intended audience in the Netherlands.

Next Steps

While the launch event is still some time away, the chorus has confirmed that donors to the campaign will receive a complimentary ticket, subject to venue capacity. They are also extending an invitation to education professionals who may be interested in assisting with the distribution of the films and materials. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the organisation directly.
