The incident occurred after two separate demonstrations took place on the Ossenmarkt. One, organized by a group called 'Nationaal Protest', focused on issues including national asylum policy and the housing crisis. In response, a counter-demonstration was held on the opposite side of the square to oppose their platform.
While the demonstrations themselves concluded with only verbal confrontations, the situation escalated later. According to the victims, they were walking near the Cascadeplein after the events had dispersed when they were ambushed.
Details of the Assault
One of the victims described the attack as sudden and unprovoked. "They came out of nowhere. We were not prepared at all," they told RTV Noord. "This has certainly had an impact on us. My fellow demonstrator was hit particularly hard. He is suffering the most from it."
The assailants, described as a group of five to six young men dressed in black, reportedly kicked and punched the two individuals, causing minor injuries. During the assault, they forcibly took the rainbow flag the pair was carrying. The victims also stated they believe their attackers are identifiable in photographs taken of the 'Nationaal Protest' participants earlier in the day.
Police Seeking Witnesses
A video of the assault has since been circulated on social media. Police have confirmed that a report has been filed and have issued a public call for witnesses to come forward with any information or additional footage that could aid the investigation.
The targeted theft of the rainbow flag suggests the attack may have been a hate-motivated crime. This incident occurs amidst a broader national conversation about the safety of visibly LGBTQ+ individuals in public spaces.
