Karin van Paassen and soek zet exhibit their work at Galerie Amstel 41. In their work, both artists explore the vulnerability of the body, each through a distinctive artisanal language: soek through fabric and embroidery, and Karin through black porcelain.
About the Artists
soek zet explores desire, identity and corporeality in fragile textile works made from fine embroidery thread. Drawing on memories, images and personal experiences, he creates layered compositions of lines, texts and figures that appear to move and never fully settle into place. For this exhibition, he was inspired by the sculptures of Michelangelo. Where he once saw mainly strength and perfection, he now perceives vulnerability and fragility instead. Through embroidered interpretations of human figures and anatomy, he depicts desires, thoughts and a body that is never unequivocal. Instagram
Karin van Paassen presents her cache-sexe collection, inspired by traditional body coverings from African, Asian and early European cultures, as well as by her own experience of chronic pain. Her black porcelain objects embrace the body with flowing forms, yet contain sharp details such as nails, bones, vertebrae and amulets. In this way, she conveys the tension between beauty and pain, softness and hardness. The addition of horsehair lends her work an extra layer of vulnerability and tactility. Instagram
Both artists connect personal experiences with universal themes such as desire, identity and corporeality. Their work invites viewers to look again at the body: both powerful and fragile at once.
