The work of American trans artist Martine Gutierrez is coming to Amsterdam with 'Wunderkind', a new exhibition of photographs and performance pieces. Hosted at the Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography, the series delves into the ways identity, gender, and sexuality are shaped from a young age.

Gutierrez, known for her elaborate self-portraits and cinematic style, serves as the central figure in her own work. In 'Wunderkind', she uses her body as a canvas to explore transformation and heritage, blending personal autobiography with broader cultural commentary. The exhibition poses the question: is an artist born or made? It seeks answers by looking back at the formative years of childhood.

The series features toys and other objects from Gutierrez's own youth, reimagined to investigate how play and imagination contribute to our understanding of self. Through these carefully constructed scenes, she examines the roots of artistic awareness and queer identity, creating a visual narrative that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

The exhibition will be accessible during special evening hours on several Thursdays throughout July and August, offering a unique opportunity to experience the work.
