Amsterdam's LGBTQ+ community will come together on Tuesday evening to honor the victims of the attack that struck Berlin's Pride celebrations over the weekend. Stichting Homomonument is organizing the gathering, which will take place at 20:00 at the Homomonument on the Westermarkt.

The organization invites everyone to attend, to lay flowers or light a candle in a show of support for the victims, their loved ones, and the wider queer community. Among those scheduled to speak are the Dutch-German influencer couple Karl and Daan, who were present at the Pride event in Berlin when the attack occurred on Saturday evening.

The Attack in Berlin

The memorial follows the tragic events in the German capital, where a driver rammed a car into a crowd of Pride attendees before attacking people with a knife. One person was killed and 29 others were injured. According to Berlin police, none of the injured were in life-threatening condition as of Sunday.

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect, identified as 21-year-old German citizen Abdul Ballout, was shot and killed by police on Sunday evening after a manhunt. He was known to law enforcement and is believed to have had ties to Islamist groups.

Community Solidarity

The gathering in Amsterdam is one of several acts of solidarity across Europe. On Sunday evening, Berlin held its own vigil, illuminating the iconic Brandenburg Gate in rainbow colors. Closer to home, Amsterdam's Milkshake festival observed a minute of silence over the weekend to remember those affected by the violence.
