A Holiday Tradition with a Twist of Kindness
The holiday season in Amsterdam is magical, but for many in our city, it can also be a time of financial strain and isolation. As a community that understands the importance of solidarity and support, we have a wonderful opportunity to share some warmth and kindness. Serve the City Amsterdam is once again running its brilliant 'Reversed Advent Calendar' initiative, and it’s a simple, powerful way to make a direct impact.
Last year, this campaign saw over 500 volunteers assemble 1,000 personalized Christmas boxes for undocumented people in the city. This year, they're aiming to do it again, and everyone is invited to join in.
How Does It Work?
The concept is beautifully simple. Instead of opening a door and taking a treat each day in December, you do the opposite: you add a specific item to a box. By the time the holidays arrive, you’ll have curated a complete, thoughtful gift package ready to be donated to a local family or individual who needs it most.
Participating is straightforward:
- Sign Up: Register through the official form to let them know you're participating.
- Fill Your Box: Using their provided list, you'll collect 21 essential items for a festive Christmas dinner. The total cost is estimated to be around €35.
- Drop It Off: Deliver your completed box to one of Serve the City’s designated collection points in Amsterdam.
From there, the organization ensures your gift reaches someone who could truly use a helping hand, turning a small gesture into a significant moment of connection and care during the festive season.
Can't Fill a Box? You Can Still Help!
We all have busy schedules, especially around the holidays. If you love the idea but don't have the time to shop and assemble a box, you can still contribute. A financial donation allows the Serve the City team to create a beautifully filled box on your behalf, ensuring your support still reaches someone in need.
Companies and larger groups are also encouraged to participate, making it a great option for team-building with a purpose.
