If you’ve ever found yourself in a YouTube rabbit hole at 2 a.m. learning how to perfect your winged eyeliner, or spent a whole weekend rearranging your apartment to achieve the perfect 'Japandi' aesthetic, you’ve probably felt the pressure to optimize. Now, there’s a word for it. Dictionary.com has crowned maxxing as its 2026 Word of the Year, and it perfectly captures the very online, very contemporary obsession with levelling up every single aspect of our lives.
So, what exactly is it? Maxxing is the act of taking something and pushing it to its absolute limit for maximum results. It’s a slang term that gets attached to other words to describe a focused effort at self-improvement. The most well-known example is looksmaxxing, which is all about enhancing your physical appearance through skincare, fitness, fashion—you name it.
But the fun of maxxing is its infinite, and often hilarious, flexibility. Decided to embrace the lifestyle of a chic Italian grandmother? You’re nonnamaxxing. Spending a Friday night on the sofa with snacks and a good movie? That’s just cozymaxxing. It’s a linguistic tool that can be both deadly serious and deeply ironic.
A Slightly Messy Origin Story
The term has its roots in online forums and gaming culture, specifically from the term 'min-maxing' (minimizing weaknesses while maximizing strengths). Early on, 'looksmaxxing' was popular in 'manosphere' corners of the internet. But, like all potent internet slang, it couldn't be contained. The term broke free and has since been adopted and adapted by a much wider, more diverse audience who are using it in ways that are creative, funny, and far removed from its original context.
Our Kind of Language
For us in the queer community, the idea of 'maxxing' feels particularly resonant. So much of the queer experience is about self-creation—actively defining and shaping our identities, our appearances, and our lives on our own terms. In that sense, isn't finding your gender expression a form of gendervibesmaxxing? Or perfecting your look for Pride a type of queerjoymaxxing?
The concept also taps directly into our community’s love for niche obsessions and deep dives. Are you spending hours perfecting your lip-syncs? You might be dragmaxxing. Is your entire feed dedicated to your growing collection of houseplants? Welcome to plantparentmaxxing.
Perhaps most importantly, we get the irony. We understand the power of taking the relentless pressure to be 'perfect' and turning it into a joke. Rebranding a mental health day as selfcaremaxxing or a messy night out as chaosmaxxing is a way of coping with modern pressures through humour. It’s a little bit camp, and we love it.
The Runners-Up
While maxxing took the crown, a few other words were in the running and tell their own story about 2026:
- Affordability: A word on everyone’s mind as we all try to figure out how to pay for housing, groceries, and the occasional iced coffee. A universal struggle.
- Data center: With the rise of AI, these massive, power-hungry buildings have entered public conversation, raising questions about technology and the environment.
- Odyssey: Thanks to a big-screen adaptation of the ancient epic, this word for a long, adventurous journey saw a huge spike.
- Unc: A slang term derived from 'uncle' in AAVE, now used by Gen Z to call out anyone (especially Millennials) who is a bit out of touch or 'corny'. If you’ve been called 'unc', it might be time to update your playlist.
Ultimately, maxxing reflects the dual reality of our time: the genuine desire for self-improvement alongside the exhausting pressure to optimize everything. It’s a word that can be aspirational, critical, or just plain silly. So, what are you maxxing this year?
