After years of waiting, it looks like the MCU is finally doing justice to a founding X-Men member. Rumours suggest Bobby Drake, aka Iceman, will be in the new movie and will be openly gay.

It's about time.

Let's be real, the X-Men have always been our story. Since their creation, the mutants of the Marvel universe—feared and hated by a world that doesn't understand them—have been a powerful allegory for the queer experience. So, as we've all been waiting (and waiting...) for Marvel Studios to finally bring them into the main MCU, there's been one big question on our minds: will they get it right?

Well, it looks like we can breathe a small, cautiously optimistic sigh of relief. The latest tea from industry insiders suggests that Marvel plans to introduce one of the founding X-Men members in their upcoming reboot, and he'll be openly gay. Get ready to welcome Bobby Drake, aka Iceman.

A History of Ice and Closets

For anyone not deep in the comic book lore, this is a pretty big deal. Bobby Drake was there from the very beginning in X-Men #1 back in 1963. For decades, he was just the team's jokester, the youngest member who could make ice slides. But in 2015, in a storyline in All-New X-Men, a younger, time-displaced version of Bobby was gently outed by the telepath Jean Grey. This led to the adult Bobby confronting his own identity and coming out as well.

It was a landmark moment that made headlines, finally making the subtext text for a character many had long read as queer. Of course, this is a far cry from the version we saw in the early 2000s Fox films, where he was given a girlfriend (Rogue) and his queerness was completely erased. It seems the MCU is ready to correct that.

According to reports from scoopers Alex Perez and Daniel Richtman, not only is Bobby in the movie, but the studio is also casting Beast. With Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Angel already reportedly cast, this would mean we're getting the complete, original 1963 line-up on the big screen together for the first time. A nice touch for the nerds among us.

Marvel's Queer Report Card

This wouldn't be the MCU's first queer character, of course. We had Phastos and his lovely family in Eternals, Loki's bisexuality was confirmed in a single line of dialogue, and we've got high hopes for characters like Billy Maximoff (Wiccan) in the future. But placing a gay man front-and-centre as a founding member of one of their biggest properties feels like a significant step forward.

The X-Men's story is one of found family and fighting for your right to exist. Having that story led by an openly gay character isn't just a diversity win; it's an authentic reflection of what the X-Men have always stood for.

Our Community Wishlist

With Bobby hopefully breaking the ice, it gets us thinking about who else from the massive X-Men roster we'd love to see join the party. Here are a few of our top picks:

  • Kitty Pryde: Another character who recently came out as bisexual in the comics. She's a fan-favourite for a reason, growing from the team's kid sister to a formidable leader. Her presence would be more than welcome.
  • Northstar: Marvel's first-ever openly gay superhero. Jean-Paul Beaubier's journey, including his marriage to his husband Kyle, was a historic moment in comics. He's an essential part of queer comic history.
  • Magik: Illyana Rasputin, the queer sorceress queen of the demonic realm of Limbo, was a standout in the otherwise-forgettable New Mutants movie. She's a complex, powerful character who deserves a proper MCU introduction.

For now, the news about Iceman remains a rumour. But it's a promising one that suggests Marvel understands the weight and responsibility that comes with bringing the X-Men to a new generation. We'll be watching closely, with our fingers crossed.
