The afterlife gets a seductive edge. The film is set in nightclub Babel, a mysterious place where mortals come into contact with La Flaca – the personification of death. In this enchanting setting, visitors try to outsmart her by using years of their lives as stakes in their personal quests. We follow, among others, Dante, who seeks answers about his past before his time with La Flaca runs out; Monet, whose body slowly decays as he tries to win it back; Timbí and Uma, who do everything they can to save their loved ones; and Jacob, who balances between fear and liberation just before his debut as a drag performer.
The story is steeped in mysticism, peculiar charm, and absurdist flair, and is set in a world where gender diversity is a given and existential themes such as love, loss, faith, identity, and liberation predominate. The film weaves memories and destinies together into a magical-realist universe, in which nothing is what it seems – from a talking salamander to extravagant production design with a punk edge. Visually, the film is a wild experiment full of quirky details.
