Four Shades of Old tells the story of four women aged 65 and older who have started a reading club to break their loneliness. During their meetings, their personal memories, secrets, and struggles come to the surface. The play deals with themes such as aging, physical and mental decline, loneliness, friendship, loss, and the desire to decide on the end of life for oneself.
An important storyline emerges when Mark, the son of one of the women, visits after a long time and reveals that he would rather be a girl. This revelation sets a lot in motion and shows what it feels like to be trapped in a body that does not match your identity. With music, humor, and moving scenes, the performance offers an honest and sometimes confrontational look at aging, friendship, and the search for oneself.
