Queer Power: Dutch Queer Shorts

As part of the Queer Power programme, Eye is screening a collection of six outstanding Dutch queer short films.

Programme

  • Marlon Brando (Vincent Tilanus, 2020, 20')

During their final weeks of high school, Cas and Naomi – both out of the closet – just want to spend all their time together. As ‘brother and sister’ from different parents, they offer one another the security and love they can’t find elsewhere. But when their plans for the future threaten to drive them apart, their relationship starts to drift, and clingy Cas has to learn to be alone.

  • Seahorse Parents (Miriam Guttmann, 2023, 10')

Did you know there is only one species of animal where the male carries the babies? In this short documentary, four pregnant transgenders tell their own personal stories of how it is to carry a baby as a transgender man.

  • Marleen (Jop Leuven, 2024, 7')

During group therapy, Lena talks about the relationships that have determined her life: with her father, with her first boyfriend – and with Marleen, who with her open attitude helped Lena to change.

  • Otherland (Jan Pieter Tuinstra & Keren Levi, 2018, 13')

Vogue dancer Elvin Elejandro appears at a Voodoo Carnival Ball. This involves a major dance competition where he’ll have to prove himself to be accepted by the ballroom community. He thinks back to his youth on Sint Maarten and the transformation he’s undergone since then. The freedom he longed for back then seems to be finally within reach.

  • Yulia & Juliet (Zara Dwinger, 2018, 11')

In the hopeless environment of a youth detention centre, two girls find solace in their love for one another. "You are the sun", one says. "Don’t be so poetic", the other replies, as they secretly kiss. There’s no room for their relationship in the detention centre, but when one of them is released, they are separated entirely. Will they be able to recapture their love later, outside the walls of the centre – or is it better to reunite within the familiar, but closed, environment?

  • Questbound: Forbidden Ventures of the Undead Soul (Alexander Bierling & Owen Buckley, 2022, 9')

A centuries old, immortal king misinterprets the intentions of a noble knight, and accidentally flirts with a married man.
