After the theater hit 'Who's afraid of Oscar Wilde'—according to the Dutch Theatre Jury, one of the best performances of the season—the creators are making a strong comeback with a new black comedy: KATWIJK.
A laughably recognizable performance about intergenerational miscommunication, good intentions, and (self)acceptance.
When her friends cancel their annual weekend getaway at the last minute, late-fifties Andrea asks her lesbian daughter Joosje to join her at the luxury holiday bungalow in Katwijk. Joosje has been at home with burnout for six months and doesn't want to disappoint her mother again. But because a weekend alone with her mother and all the forced coziness that comes with it seems like hell on earth, she persuades her best friend Laurens to come along. And now the three of them are in rainy Katwijk. Joosje can only sleep, Laurens tries to please everyone, and Andrea had imagined it all very differently.
Then Andrea finds the manuscript of Joosje's new book in her bag, in which she settles the score with her upbringing and the role her—according to Joosje, clearly narcissistic—mother played in it. Where they were initially walking on eggshells, the luxury bungalow turns into a verbal battlefield before dessert, and even Laurens's culinary masterpieces can no longer save the soured atmosphere.
KATWIJK is a tragicomic performance about the (hetero) parent / (queer) child relationship, identity, and mental health, and it paints an intimate portrait of two generations who want to understand each other but just don't get it.
"Katwijk opens as a hilarious sitcom around the kitchen island, but gradually reveals itself as a complex, well-thought-out generational drama about being different." ★★★★★ de Volkskrant

About the creators
After rave reviews and the selection for the Dutch Theatre Festival for their previous performance Who's afraid of Oscar Wilde, but above all the reactions from the audience, Compagnie Red Yellow & Blue is now continuing its mission to create top-tier queer theater for a broad audience.
With accessible, intelligently written comedies, the company takes you through laughter to sore points that deserve more attention. Sore points between people, in society, and on the world stage. The creators want to entertain, chafe, move, and connect, and are committed to representing groups and perspectives that are under-highlighted.
