A Cult Classic of Queer Cinema

This cult classic visualizes the homoerotic fantasies of a young male prostitute. The gorgeous young man takes refuge in honeyed fantasies about another stunning young man – a narcissistic projection of himself.

Photographer James Bidgood was the first to apply 1940’s and 1950’s pulp and glamour aesthetics to homo-erotic photographs. His cinematic debut Pink Narcissus was ultimately released anonymously because Bidgood’s final cut was rejected. For a film created around the same time as Deep Throat, at the height of a wave of explicit pornography, Pink Narcissus is remarkably chaste in its depiction of the homo-erotic fantasies of a young male prostitute.

Restoration

Pink Narcissus was restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive using original 35mm material, including a 35mm print from the Eye collection. Screenings will feature both the Dutch premiere of the restored DCP and the 35mm print used for the restoration.
