We will walk 6 km at a leisurely pace to enjoy the surroundings, over the dike, along the 'werven' (mounds), and through the old streets on the island of Marken. After a coffee break, the walk can be extended with another island walk.
The old houses on Marken are built on 'werven'. These are artificial hills, 2 meters high, which the inhabitants raised with manure, sod, and household waste because the island regularly flooded. Since the construction of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, there is no longer a risk of flooding. The mounds are still intact.
The walking guide is Lidewijde. The paths on and next to the dikes are not always paved, so they are not suitable for walkers (rollators).
More info about the dike reinforcement on Marken can be found here.
