This commemoration, part of the Transgender Day Of Remembrance (TDOR), was held to reflect on the people who were murdered worldwide in the past year for being transgender. In previous years, the commemoration was held outside at the Homomonument; moving the event indoors to the Westerkerk resulted in a significantly larger turnout.

The evening was introduced and presented by Dinah Bons, with several guest speakers and musical interludes by harpist and singer Daan Verlaan.

Speakers & Tributes

Rutger Groot Wassink (alderman for the municipality of Amsterdam, GroenLinks) and Vera Bergkamp (Member of Parliament, D66) expressed their support from local and national politics. They voiced their concerns but also offered encouraging words, stating their commitment to combating discrimination and violence against transgender people.

Ana Paula Lima (Trans United) and Sean Claude Neufville spoke from the perspective of the transgender community itself. They expressed their concerns, sorrow, and anger, alongside feelings of insecurity. Ana Paula Lima called on politicians and civil society organizations to increase their efforts to address the problems faced by transgender people, while Jean Claude urged the transgender community to support one another and fight together against transphobia.

After the guest speakers, Alejandra Ortiz and Timothy Aarons read the names of the 369 transgender individuals who had been killed by violence since October 1, 2017. The commemoration concluded outside with the laying of flowers at the Homomonument.
