Public Reading
Theater Bellevue regularly organizes public readings of new theater texts. No pretense or distraction, just the story, the word art, and the vocal delivery of experienced actors in an intimate setting. A great recipe for lovers of language and theater texts.
About the Play
'In the Morning Light' is a poetic and painful story about the intertwining of colonialism and queer history, and the vulnerability of freedom in a world that is slowly darkening.
For the artist Walter Spies, the Balinese village of Iseh is a refuge and a source of inspiration. His life, surrounded by art and culture, seems idyllic. He portrayed the village in one of his most beautiful paintings, 'Iseh in the Morning Light'. But his paradise turns into a prison when in 1938, due to the rise of fascism, a witch hunt against homosexuals breaks out in the Dutch East Indies. What do you do when the place where you sought freedom becomes the place that excludes you?
