For the performance Family, theater maker Louis Janssens has invited four actors of different generations to join him on stage. They tell stories, ask questions, and seek comfort, support, and recognition from each other.
It's about how family ties connect us and how they inescapably define our lives. About blood family and chosen family. About parents, children, growing up, and the fear of being left behind alone. The actors are on stage as themselves, but throughout the performance, they also seem to become more and more like each other's family.
Family is a poetic and recognizable text-based performance about the universal given of family. Starting from a queer perspective, they tell a larger human story about having and searching for a family. Not everyone has children, but in the end, we are all a child.
Reviews
"Family is warm, honest, and effective in its simplicity. The closeness the actors create remains palpable in the theater long after the applause. For a moment, you are each other's chosen family." - Het Parool
"Theater maker Janssens asks for some patience, but he ultimately manages to win over everyone in the audience, without any frills." ★★★★ - de Volkskrant
