- DORIAN: portrait of an insatiable - Club WILD
A musical and queer adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.
DORIAN: portrait of an insatiable is a musical, queer adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, directed by Igor Alvarez Cugat with text by Josephine Scholte.
A modern Dorian Gray, played by Rowan Kievits, discovers his beauty when a friendly artist paints him. In his desire for eternal youth, he immerses himself in nightlife. He discovers where his desirability can take him and throws himself into short-lived love affairs with men, often under the influence.
Meanwhile, he carries a great secret: while he loses none of his youthful beauty, his image in the painting becomes increasingly ugly. As he slowly becomes estranged from everyone around him and himself, his urge for endless pleasure takes a dangerous turn.
A psychological trip full of questions about aesthetics and ethics, pleasure, happiness, and malleability.
“DORIAN: portrait of an insatiable thus becomes an ode to the beauty of youth, and a beautifully settled commentary on its finiteness.” — Theaterkrant
"The performance DORIAN, a contemporary adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic The Picture of Dorian Gray, is a fascinating psychological journey through themes such as beauty, hedonism, escapism, and the fear of aging." — from the Amsterdam Fringe Festival jury report
Club WILD is a theater collective founded in 2024 consisting of Rowan Kievits, Josephine Scholte, and Igor Alvarez Cugat. In their work, the makers search for a way to merge apparent contradictions and opt for an interdisciplinary approach, where theater, music, movement, and visual arts form a dynamic interplay. Club WILD draws inspiration from both classic and modern stories and styles and seeks fluidity and freedom in queer themes.
