In the seventies and eighties, the queer community in the Netherlands developed a powerful tradition of activism and mutual solidarity. In a time of social exclusion, political invisibility, and the rise of the HIV/AIDS crisis, numerous initiatives emerged in which care, protest, and collective organization went hand in hand.
This evening, we will discuss the ways in which queer interests were placed on the agenda within broader social and political movements, such as feminist and left-wing action groups. How were actions organized to support gay and lesbian groups in the Netherlands and abroad? What motivated people, and what networks made this activism possible?
We will be in conversation with Fleur Renkema, a PhD candidate at Utrecht University, about her research on the left-wing gay and lesbian movement in the Netherlands in the seventies and eighties. More speakers to follow.
