Discover the power of clay and stories during an inspiring workshop centered on the Queer history of the Caribbean. Together, we will delve into the stories often missing from traditional archives. By working with clay, we give these histories and personal experiences a tangible form. This workshop is specifically aimed at empowering QTIBIPOC: a space to create, reflect, and make new images of the stories that have remained unseen or unheard for too long.

Good to know

  • Suitable for ages 18+
  • The workshop will be in English.

The workshop is organized by students of the Reinwardt Academy and is a co-creation with queer collective Quin Harrevelt of Yeye Watra, Team Transhuis Caribbean Amsterdam, and assistant professor of anthropology Julian Isenia.

The workshop uses inspiration from Caribbean queer history to visualize contemporary stories in an artistic way. Julian Isenia guides the team with their academic perspective and knowledge in processing history into inspiration for the workshop.

Quin Harrevelt, a queer collective and experienced organizer of similar workshops and events for queer youth of color, will lead the workshop.

The workshop will take place at Transhuis Amsterdam, with assistance from the T-Huis Caribbean Team.

The workshop takes place on March 31, Trans Visibility Day. The focus is therefore on trans individuals and trans identity.

In this workshop, we start with queer Caribbean stories from history. These stories have remained largely unheard throughout history due to power dynamics in the heritage field, stigmas from the church, and colonization.

Within Queer History Month, the programming is also still predominantly white, and this perspective is very underrepresented. With this inspiration, participants will work with clay, creating pieces inspired by their own stories. For example, about their pride, (self)love, discovery, and expression. The workshop intends to empower queer-Caribbean youth and to archive their personal history in a creative way.

This program is organized by students of the Reinwardt Academy as part of their Culture and Heritage studies.
