On the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), we gather for a special wake. This day internationally calls attention to the hatred and discrimination based on sexual and gender diversity and its social unacceptability. It also celebrates the day in 1990 when the World Health Organization officially removed homosexuality from the international list of diseases.
Because COC is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, but especially because his story deserves to be heard, Myrtille Danse, president of COC Nederland, will deliver a 'vita' (a portrait of someone who inspired many others) about Niek Engelschman. Under his alias Bob Angelo, he was one of the founders of the COC.
This wake is part of the weekly evening prayers in the Oude Kerk. The service will be led by Rev. Wielie Elhorst, the LGBTIQA+ pastor of Amsterdam. The cantor is Bert Griffioen, and Jeroen Koopman will play the organ. Everyone is welcome.
