An intriguing psychological drama by Ingmar Bergman. Persona (1966) follows actress Elisabet Vogler (Liv Ullmann), who collapses during a performance of Electra and abruptly decides to remain silent. She is hospitalized and entrusted to nurse Alma (Bibi Andersson), with whom she isolates herself by the sea. Slowly, the boundaries between the women disappear, and it is no longer clear who is the patient and who is the nurse.
Themes such as motherhood, guilt, abortion, and desire made Persona controversial at the time, but these subjects and Bergman's phenomenal style also make the film timeless. The minimal setting enhances the intensity of the performances, which are among the most iconic in film history. Persona became Bergman's magnum opus and is one of the favorite films of Hildur Guðnadóttir, associate artist of the Holland Festival.
Persona is part of Hildur's Movie Picks: four films chosen by associate artist Hildur Guðnadóttir, shown at EYE. The other films are Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux, and Tár.
