The Legendary Musical

Foxtrot is one of the greatest successes of Annie M.G. Schmidt and Harry Bannink, founders of the original Dutch 'mjoeziekul' (musical). This year marks thirty years since Schmidt passed away. As an ode, a brand-new version of this legendary musical can be seen in Dutch theaters.

A True Classic

Story

Foxtrot is set in the turbulent 1930s, a time of carefree pleasure but also of worries about the threat of war and an economic crisis. The story begins when the naive Josien leaves the province and ends up in an artists' boarding house in Amsterdam. There she meets Jules and Lisette: revue stars in a nightclub on the bustling Rembrandtplein.

Boarding house owner Mathilde has Jules and Lisette pose as a German teacher and an opera singer. Josien takes lessons from Jules and quickly falls head over heels in love with him, but he cannot reciprocate her love. When Paul – Jules's secret love – then shares a bed with Josien, it results in a pregnancy and the need to make impossible choices.

All-Star Cast

This musical classic features songs etched into our collective memory: ‘Dansen op een Vulkaan’ (Dancing on a Volcano), ‘Sorry dat ik besta’ (Sorry That I Exist), and of course the grand showbiz opening number ‘De dertiger jaren’ (The Thirties). The now 80-year-old Gerrie van der Klei returns to the musical after 49 years. Alternating with Marjolijn Touw, she plays the boarding house owner Mathilde. Her former role is now played by Renée de Gruijl. William Spaaij plays the demanding male lead, taking over from Willem Nijholt and Paul de Leeuw. The young talent Teuntje Post follows in the footsteps of Trudy Labij and Carice van Houten in the role of Josien.

New Adaptation

The experienced creative team consists of director Joep Onderdelinden (De Hospita, Blind Date), scriptwriter Dick van den Heuvel (Was getekend, Annie M.G. Schmidt, Malle Babbe), and creative director Maurice Wijnen (Petticoat, Ciske). In close consultation with the Schmidt and Bannink estates, they are creating a new adaptation based on the original 1977 play.

Duration: Approx. 2.5 hours, including intermission.
Price: Tickets from €35.
