Performance artist and circus performer Laura Murphy (UK) combines aerial acrobatics, theatre, video projection, and creative subtitling with themes such as mental health in a vulnerable and deeply personal performance.
A Spectacle of Herself explores what it means to take up space, expose yourself, and be seen as a queer and neurodiverse person in the 21st-century space race. Juxtaposing her own lived experience with the modern day obsession of conquering space Murphy critiques the systems of capitalism and patriarchy, and challenges the mainstream narratives of spectacle and what it means for marginalised bodies to take up ‘space’.
The viewer experiences an acrobatic adventure with Laura, with ever-changing identities in ever-changing landscapes, in which the artist literally makes an (in)appropriate display of herself. Because in the theatre, Laura can express herself in ways that are not yet acceptable in many spaces. With her critical and bold style, Laura navigates between personal experience and today's politics.
This leads to a particularly unique, engaging, entertaining, and also moving performance. Laura is a disarming performer you won't soon forget.
