For a full school year, you follow a group of students. You're there for intense break-time conversations, painful friendship break-ups, and the Christmas celebration where not everyone sings in tune. Not only that, but you also hear what's going on in their heads: shame, infatuation, insecurity, and big dreams. Weirdo is about feeling 'different', peer pressure, friendship, and finding your place. For everyone aged 12 and up, and for all the adults who know all too well what it was like.
A performance with a lot of humor, recognizable situations, and a touch of magical realism. Think of a theater version of the film Eighth Grade, the series Sex Education, mixed with the Inside Out films.
Director Loek de Bakker previously created the successful performances Supernormal and Only Sweet Boys at HNTjong. In his shows, he chooses stories of outsiders and questions existing norms in a humorous and poetic way.
"Everyone feels like a weirdo sometimes, especially in high school. How are you supposed to act? Who do you want to be and how do you do that? Thoughts that make your head explode, but that you'd rather keep to yourself. By actually hearing all those thoughts, fears, and dreams, it turns out we have more in common than we think."
- Loek de Bakker
