Art as Activism: A New Mission for the AMSGMC

For anyone who witnessed the Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus’s recent show, Welcome to the Family!, the experience was more than just a concert. It was a moving tapestry of personal stories, shared through song and dance, that resonated deeply with the audience. Now, the chorus is determined to take that emotional power beyond the theatre and into a place where it’s needed most: Dutch schools.

The AMSGMC has launched an ambitious project to transform their stage show into a professional documentary. The goal is to create an educational tool that can be used in classrooms across the Netherlands to promote LGBTQ+ visibility and create a safer, more inclusive school climate for young people.

A Teacher's Perspective

The inspiration for the project comes from within the chorus itself. Kenneth, a singer in the group and a primary school teacher by profession, saw a direct link between the stories shared on stage and the struggles he witnesses daily in the schoolyard.

“In our last winter show, the audience was visibly moved, and Jaap and Nicky’s stories, in particular, really hit home for me,” Kenneth explains. “As a primary school teacher, I see kids struggling every day—not just with their own feelings, but with the attitudes of the world around them. Unfortunately, name-calling and exclusion are still common.”

He notes a critical gap in available resources for educators to tackle these subjects effectively. This project aims to fill that void with authentic, relatable stories from the community.

A Partnership for Impact

This isn't just about creating a film. The AMSGMC is collaborating with COC Nederland, the country's leading LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, to develop a comprehensive educational package. This will include professional lesson plans and workshops designed to help school staff reflect on and improve safety for all students.

The documentary, which will be produced in Dutch, will serve as the centerpiece for these discussions, bringing real-life experiences into the classroom to foster empathy and understanding.

How You Can Help

To bring this vital project to life, the Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus has launched a crowdfunding campaign. They are calling on the community to help fund the production of the documentary and the development of the educational materials.

“This is our way of giving back to our community,” the group states. By supporting this initiative, you can help ensure that the next generation of LGBTQ+ youth feels seen, supported, and safe in their schools.
