A new comprehensive survey in Germany shows broad societal acceptance for gay and lesbian individuals, but reveals significant reservations and lower support for transgender and non-binary people.

German Acceptance High for LGB People, But Survey Reveals a Stark 'Trans Gap'

A new survey from Germany paints a complex picture of LGBTQ+ acceptance, highlighting a significant divergence in public opinion. While support for gay and lesbian rights, such as marriage equality, is robust across most demographics, acceptance drops sharply when it comes to transgender and non-binary identities.

The study, conducted by market research institute Pollfish on behalf of Erobella, surveyed 1,000 people and found that three-quarters (75%) of Germans support same-sex marriage. A similar number (72%) stated they would have no issue with a gay chancellor leading the country.

However, this broad acceptance appears to be more conditional than it seems. The data reveals a notable gap when the focus shifts to gender identity.

Persistent Hurdles for Trans and Non-Binary People

The survey indicates that prejudices against gender minorities remain a considerable challenge. Key findings include:

  • Only 32% of respondents believe the official recognition of a third gender option ('diverse') is appropriate. This legal option was established following a 2017 court ruling for intersex people and was recently expanded through Germany's Self-Determination Act.
  • While 72% of Germans would be comfortable if their child were homosexual, that figure falls to just 48% if their child were transgender.

These figures suggest that while legal frameworks are evolving, social acceptance is lagging, creating a difficult environment for trans and non-binary individuals.

The Political and Generational Divide

The survey underscores a strong political polarization on these issues. Supporters of the Green Party (92% support for marriage equality) and the Left Party (89%) showed the highest levels of acceptance. In contrast, supporters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) were the least accepting, although a surprising 60% of their voters still support same-sex marriage—a stance at odds with the party's official platform, which has previously sought to revoke the right.

In a reversal of long-standing trends, the survey also found that older Germans are now slightly more supportive of marriage equality than younger generations. Among those over 60, support stands at 78%, compared to 73% in the 18-to-39 age group. As in previous studies, women were generally found to be more accepting of queer rights than men.

Legal Progress vs. Social Reality

The pollsters concluded that political division is a "decisive factor" in the rejection of gender minorities. "While the progressive-liberal camp exhibits high to very high acceptance, the conservative and right-wing camps take a more reserved to dismissive stance," the report states.

The findings serve as a reminder that legal equality does not automatically translate to social integration. "The lived realities of trans* people and the recognition of non-binary identities, in particular, remain central challenges for an inclusive society," the researchers concluded. For communities in the Netherlands and across Europe, the German data offers a valuable, if sobering, look at the progress made and the significant work that still lies ahead.
