For many whose gender identity exists outside the traditional male-female binary, finding a space for open conversation can be a challenge. TransAnders, an initiative by Dutch organization Transvisie, aims to provide exactly that: a dedicated discussion group for individuals exploring their gender identity in a safe and supportive environment.

The group serves as a valuable resource for peer support, where individuals can share experiences and navigate the complexities of living in a society largely structured around binary gender roles.

Who Is Welcome?

TransAnders is open to anyone aged 18 and over who feels they don't fit neatly into conventional gender categories. This includes, but is not limited to, individuals who identify as non-binary, agender, bigender, genderfluid, or genderqueer. The organizers emphasize that you don't need a specific label to attend; the space is explicitly welcoming to those who are questioning, exploring, or simply feel a connection to gender diversity, including crossdressers and transvestites.

Shared Experiences and Discussion

The core of TransAnders is the exchange of experiences, with meetings structured around the topics and questions that participants bring to the table. The goal is to foster self-development in a secure setting. Common discussion points include:

  • Feelings and doubts surrounding gender identity.
  • Experiences with coming out to friends, family, and colleagues.
  • Navigating social or medical transition.
  • The use of pronouns and finding one's place in a binary world.

Meeting Schedule & Locations

TransAnders organizes three meetings each month, offering both in-person and online options to ensure accessibility.

  • Nieuwegein (In-Person): Held on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 14:00 to 17:30 (doors open at 13:30).
  • Groningen (In-Person): Held on the 2nd Sunday of the month from 14:30 to 17:00 (doors open at 14:00). This event runs concurrently with Genderhome Groningen.
  • Online (via Zoom): Held on the 2nd Saturday of the month from 14:00 to 15:30. Pre-registration is required for the online session.

How to Get Involved

To join the online meeting or to subscribe to the TransAnders-specific newsletter for more detailed updates, you can send an email to transanders@transvisie.nl. For those attending in-person events, Transvisie has established house rules to ensure a respectful environment and offers information on a travel expense reimbursement policy.
