It’s been a minute since we heard new music from Lil Nas X, and it’s fair to say it’s been a turbulent time for him. After a very public year marked by legal troubles and personal struggles, he’s back with his first track of the year, and it’s not the bombastic, meme-ready banger you might expect.
His new song, “World’s Greatest,” arrives with a six-minute short film that feels deeply personal and introspective. Directed by Phillip Youmans and filmed in his hometown of Atlanta, the video opens on a raw, vulnerable note. We see Nas in a dance studio, struggling with choreography, his trainer pushing him: "You keep doing the same thing. You know what the problem is; you’re just not fixing it."
From there, the video cuts between the present-day artist pushing through his limits and poignant, dramatized scenes from his childhood. It’s a look behind the curtain of the superstar persona, connecting the struggles of his past with the pressures of his present. The entire piece is a moving tribute to his late mother, Tamikia Hill, ending with a simple dedication to her. Just before the release, he shared one of her favorite phrases on Instagram: ‘Walk by faith, not by sight.’ He added, "As I move through life it resonates with me more & more."
A New Chapter
This return to music follows a challenging period for the artist. Last year, he faced serious felony charges following an altercation with police in Los Angeles. The legal proceedings brought his diagnosis of bipolar disorder to light, adding important context to his situation. A judge ultimately ruled to dismiss the charges on the condition that he completes a two-year treatment program, acknowledging the role his mental health played.
After the world-conquering success of his 2021 album Montero, this new chapter feels different. “World’s Greatest” is less about provocation and more about introspection. It’s a raw, honest, and beautifully crafted return from one of our community’s most important young voices.
