The series, titled 'Proud', was recently showcased at the Series Mania festival in France. It tells the story of Filip, a young man in Warsaw whose life of parties and casual hookups is abruptly interrupted when he becomes the sole guardian of his late sister's baby. This sudden responsibility forces him to confront not only the challenges of parenthood but also the societal prejudices he faces as a gay man seeking to raise a child.
In a country where legal recognition for same-sex couples is non-existent, the series navigates sensitive territory. However, its creators emphasize that the goal is not to preach, but to present a human story. "There hasn’t been a show like this before, and this subject continues to polarize our society," actor Ignacy Liss, who plays Filip, told Variety. "I think ‘Proud’ has a chance to show both sides and prove that you can – and you should – talk to each other."
A Reluctant Father's Journey
The character of Filip is not presented as an immediate hero. Liss describes him as someone who "evidently got lost along the way." His motivation to care for the child stems from a personal place; having grown up as an orphan himself, he is determined that his niece will not share the same fate. "He’s also capable of love and empathy," Liss explains. "Everyone has the potential to do the right thing... You just need to find your way."
Creator and director Karol Klementewicz noted that the inspiration for the story came from observing his own brother become a father. "It was fascinating to see how quickly you grow into a certain role," he said. "It’s not about changing who you are, but becoming a better version of yourself."
Navigating a Difficult Landscape
While the series focuses on personal growth, it does not shy away from the political realities of Poland. The narrative acknowledges the homophobia that affects Filip's life and his efforts to provide a stable home for the child.
"We know where we live and we know how minorities are treated here," Klementewicz stated. "We can’t completely avoid politics... There are many problems connected to homophobia, which is so cruel and really needs to stop." The aim, he added, is to encourage viewers to see past labels. "Perhaps someone will see this man as more than just his sexuality. Maybe they will see him as a human being."
The Power of Chosen Family
A central theme of 'Proud' is the importance of community. As Filip struggles with his new reality, he relies on a close-knit group of friends who form his chosen family. Liss refers to them as a "group of socially excluded people who have created a great family together."
This support system, with its own imperfections and internal conflicts, provides the foundation Filip needs. "It’s about a chosen family that forms when it’s needed," Klementewicz observed. "This show is really all about love... It turns out that it’s not just children who need adults; adults need children too. This kid saves him."
Produced by TVN Warner Bros. Discovery and Magnolia Films, 'Proud' represents a significant step for LGBTQ+ representation in Polish mainstream media. While a release date for HBO Max has not yet been announced, its debut at a major European festival suggests a story with resonance far beyond its national borders.
